Hamilton Zoo has been delighting families in the Waikato since 1969. Located northwest of Hamilton, it is surrounded by lush green fields – a great location to house all manner of animals big and small.
This well-established Zoo is home to over 600 animals across the key species: Mammals, Reptiles, Amphbians, Birds. You’ll encounter anials native to New Zealand such as the Tuatara, to exotic animals such as the Sumatran Tiger, White Rhino and of course, Monkeys. There is also a free flight aviary to watch the resident bird population.
The zoo has a special programme called Face2Face. For $15 on top of your admission, you can book in to encounter a Chimp, Tiger, Rhino or Lemur up close and personal with the guidance of the zookeeper. If you dare!
The Chimpanzee is always the crowd favourite during Face2Face events. Bookings are essential, and different animals are scheduled for each day of the week. You can book on the day, but as only 10 spaces are open each day, it is advisable to book before hand if you can, as there may be a group of 10 already booked.
Owned by the Hamilton City Council, the Zoo is of medium size compared to the Auckland Zoo, yet it still has the classic zoo favourites. The zoo site is on an incline which makes for interesting enclosures and even some views across the countryside.
Welcoming over 120,000 visitors each year, the Hamilton Zoo is a must see on your trip to Hamilton, especially if you have children. The Hamilton Zoo is also situated right next door to the Hamilton Observatory.
