The major hospital serving the Hamilton region is the Waikato Hospital. The hospital is located on Pembroke St, Hamilton. Waikato hospital is a full-service facility offering specialised medical care, and the full complement of emergency services. Waikato hospital has around 600 beds and over 2000 staff, and is administered by the Waikato District Health Board. There are also several other smaller Hamilton hospital facilites in the city that offer private services and birthing care.

Visitors are limited to two per patient at any one time. Please note that the hospital has a smokefree policy, and you are not able to smoke at all on the grounds. Please be respectful of other patients by keeping noise to a minimum. Doctors, Nurses and hospital staff are not caregivers, so children must be supervised at all times.
There is a dedicated parking building located thru Gate 1, off Pembroke Street. Follow the signs to the carpark and take a ticket from the machine. You’ll need to make payment before returning to your car. Parking in the building is free for less than 30 minutes. Prices range from $1.50 for the first hour up to a maximum $7.00 for the day. Weekly discounted passes for patients and family of patients are available for $7 by talking to ward reception.

Large in size, the campus also has a free shuttle service that circles the hospital. The Shuttle operates every 15-20 minutes and is available for patients and vistors. There are various stops around the grounds with the major stop being outside the parking building, Level B5. Look out for a mini-bus, and a golf-cart style vehicle.

About the Hospital
The hospital was built in 1886 making the facility over 125 years old. (One of the oldest in New Zealand). The hospital serves around 365,000 residents under the Waikato DHB, which is 8 percent of the NZ population. The boundary is from Coromandel to Mt Ruapehu (North to South) and Waihi to Raglan (East to West). Each year around 40,000 patients stay one of more nights. Over 160,000 are seen for emergency and specialist assessment.
Smaller town hospitals such as Whakatane, Tokoroa, and Thames Hospitals act as feeders to this hospital. The campus also houses various teaching, and research training centres including the local Faculty of Medicine and Health Science of the University of Auckland. The hospital grounds are located a short 5-10 minute walk to Lake Rotorua which is a great place to take children for some outdoors time.
